From all accounts it looks like Mascherano has told Roy Hodgson he wants to leave Liverpool. In reality Mascha had made up his mind a year ago that he wanted to leave Anfield, something to do with the wife not liking the UK, and so no one should be surprised about today’s news. His chosen destination is also no surprise, Inter Milan to be reunited with Benitez although clubs like Real Madrid and Barcelona are apparently also interested.

Mascherano is a great player and has been an excellent servant for Liverpool but any player who decides he no longer wants to wear the red shirt should be let go and, in this case, fast. Why fast? Because it allows Hodgson the opportunity to bring in other quality players using the potential fee of £25-30m Liverpool will asking for him before the summer transfer window closes at the end of August. I’ll be sorry to see Mascherano go but will also be waiting in anticipation to see who Liverpool find as his replacement.
