It wasn’t so much the fact Liverpool lost to Man United on Saturday, which was bad enough, it was more the manner in which they lost that was hard to take. Seemingly in control at half- time Liverpool lost-the-plot almost immediately after the restart conceding two Wayne Rooney goals in the space of 5 minutes. Poor defending and a schoolboy error cost Liverpool the match and not until the last 10 minutes, when Suarez scored a poachers goal, did Liverpool look like they had any chance of salvaging something from the game.

The reality is too many players continue to disappoint (more…)

Suarez & Kuyt celebrate after scoring against Man Utd.

Many Liverpool supporters will remember the shock when we learned back in 1977 that Kevin Keegan had decided Hamburg would be a better team to play for (rumour has it Tommy Smith gave him a black eye for that decision). The question was how could he be replaced? It was going to be impossible. Then a terrific bit of genius by Bob Paisley brought Kenny Dalglish to Anfield and the rest, as they say, is history.

It’s ironic a similar situation occurred this January with the shock decision by Torres to leave Liverpool. Fortunately, this time around it was Dalglish himself who had already put the wheels in motion to sign Luis Suarez whose  superb displays, especially on Sunday, have made Torres’s departure seem like a genuine piece of good luck that brought with it a boat load of money allowing Liverpool to buy Andy Carroll as well.

Suarez was superb against Man United, setting-up Dirk Kuyt’s hat trick and injecting a confidence and belief throughout the team. Suarez is class, on and off the field (as we saw in his farewell visit to Ajax) and you can only believe his partnership with Carroll will really be something special, way beyond any strike force we have seen at Anfield for a long time.

Wayne Rooney elbows James McCarthy

Just like the Football Association, I watched the replay of Wayne Rooney mugging Wigan’s James McCarthy (to watch the video CLICK HERE). The fact they decided to take no action is utterly amazing and quite literally incompetent. Like a schoolboy bully Rooney ran up behind McCarthy and elbowed him on the side of the head when he wasn’t looking, a foul that was clearly seen by referee Mark Clatternburg, but who decided to simply give a free kick. Rooney should have been sent off, no question.

But of course he’s Fergie’s boy and just like Rafa Benitez said 2 years ago, when he went on his Ferguson rant, there’s one rule for Man Utd. and another for everyone else.

It only goes to show how right Rafa was.

Artist Brando had a fantastic dream of Andy Carroll scoring a last-second winner against the mancs and came up with this inspired poster!

Nice one!

Referee Howard Webb makes another critical decision against Liverpool at Old Trafford

Only last month Liverpool found themselves deep into injury time and up against the wall attempting to get something out of the game away to Arsenal. Liverpool were awarded a free kick outside the Arsenal box, Gerrard sends the ball over the wall only for Fabregas on the edge of the penalty area to deliberately handle it and referee Howard Webb, a few yards away, dismisses an obvious penalty and Liverpool lose the game. (Here’s the link to the post I wrote about that incident – click here).

Yesterday at Old Trafford Webb was at it again. Liverpool got off to a roaring start and had taken a deserved lead through an excellent Fernando Torres header. Things were looking good. Several minutes later, however, Valencia gets the ball and heads toward the 18 yard box only to be fouled by Mascherano a few feet outside the box but due to his momentum ends up falling inside the penalty area. Once again Webb made another critical ruling against Liverpool and judged the initial foul to have been committed inside the box and awards United a penalty which got them back into the game both from a scoring and, more importantly, a psychological point of view.

Would United have still gone on to win the game had the penalty not been given? I’m not so sure. They had the better of the play in the second half but the penalty changed the game and robbed Liverpool of the upper hand and the momentum they had created. Had Liverpool been able to frustrate United deeper into the 1st half and gone in at half-time 1-0 up we may have seen a different outcome. Poor decisions like this completely change the complexion of a match and that’s exactly what happened at Old Trafford

During an after match interview Benitez refused to make too many comments about the penalty decision but clearly felt that United getting level so quickly after Liverpool had taken the lead was a major blow and changed the game.

Let’s hope Liverpool have seen the last of Howard Webb for a long time to come.

As you can see I’m predicting (and naturally hoping) that Liverpool get maximum points from their final 5 games and that United slip 3 times. Your thoughts??  Is it possible?

Many football pundits were describing this as Liverpool’s defining “make or break”  week in both the Champions League and the Premiership and it doesn’t take a genius to figure out that the London journalists couldn’t wait for Liverpool to fail. (more…)
