Michael Owen - should have been re-signed

It amazes me that after coming so close to winning the Premiership title last season everyone and his dog knew that if we were to go all the way this season we needed to strengthen the midfield, to replace Alonso, and buy a quality, established, striker to partner & support Torres. Everyone except Rafa and the rest of the Anfield management team that is.

Rafa apparently has filled the void in midfield with the signing of Aquilani. I say apparently as no one has seen him play yet beside the 20 minutes he got in the Carling Cup game against Arsenal. Now am I missing something here? If Aquilani was OK to come on for 20 minutes in that game why hasn’t he been used since? Rafa your logic is mystifying. But let’s give Benitez the benefit of the doubt on this one. Perhaps Aquilani’s injuries were more serious than we thought and he does indeed prove to be a class player.

However, there can be no forgiveness on the striker issue. (more…)

I’ve been a Liverpool supporter since the early 70’s and was fortunate enough to be in the Kop when Kevin Keegan made his debut on 14 August 1971 against Nottingham Forest.

After 12 minutes Kevin scored his first goal for the Reds from a mis-hit shot and the rest, as they say, is history.

Fast forward to 1990, one year after I had emigrated to Canada, and I was delighted to find out a tour of ex-first division players, including one Kevin Keegan, were going to be playing a local team.

It just so happened a friend of mine was the sports announcer at the local TV station and he told me he was going to interview Keegan the night before the game. Of course I told him how he was my hero so he invited me to the studio to meet him!

On Saturday, Nov 28th, I posted a simple survey asking if Rafa was still the man to lead Liverpool now and in the future or was it time to make a management change.

The results showed an emphatic support for Rafa.

Of the 307 votes cast, a resounding 71% felt we should have faith in Rafa with only 29% feeling it was time for a change. By the way, I did keep an eye on the voting before and after the Everton match and there was no difference in the percentages of those who were for or against Benitez.

I admit I was a little surprised by these results as I thought Rafa’s leadership would be called into question a lot more due to Liverpool’s poor performance so far this season.

Do you agree with these results? Are you surprised? Or are they indicative of the loyalty of Liverpool supporters who stick by their manager through thick and thin?

I think I’m safe in saying that all Liverpool supporters have real concerns about the future of the club from finances, player commitment & talent, ownership and management style. One of the key questions is do we have the right manager to lead us out of the current slump and get us back to competing at the top level this season and in seasons to come.

There seem to be two main camps when it comes to Rafa:

Camp 1) Support & have faith in him and let him do his job.

Camp 2) Rafa’s no longer the man to lead the team and it’s time to make a change.

So are you in Camp 1 or Camp 2?

It’s going to be interesting.

If you have comments about this poll make sure you post them on Liverpool Banter as well!

Like all Liverpool FC supporters I have a deep respect for the clubs unique and special history. It’s what sets the club apart from any other team in the world.

A small part of that history includes the match day programmes. I’ve been fortunate to have collected quite a few over the years, especially from the 1960′s & 70′s. In those days  programmes were much simpler, cost only 4D (4 pennies in old money), and were used mainly to welcome the visiting team to Anfield, announce the starting 11 for both teams in the centre spread (hard to believe in this day and age they could be printed in advance), and keep you up to date with the league tables, previous results and future fixtures.

The advertising in the programmes is fascinating too. In the 1st December 1965 programme against Standard Liege, British Rail are advertising return fare from Lime Street for the Chelsea v. Liverpool game for 53 shillings! Quite the coincidence! Another proudly displays the slogan “Up with the Reds! Down with Higsons!” from the Liverpool Brewery.

I consider the programmes mini-works of art, especially those with the illustrated covers. If you look carefully at the 1964/65 programme covers, you’ll see the background is a photograph of the old main stand with the illustrated player over the top.

Above is a link to a simple web gallery which show the covers of 23 European programmes from the 1960′s, including the first game Liverpool ever played in Europe against Reykjavik in Iceland.

I hope you enjoy the programmes.

It's all about maximizing profit and reducing expenditure

It's all about maximizing profit and reducing expenditure

A lot of digital ink has been used to write about the poor management style and broken promises of the two American owners ever since they assumed ownership of Liverpool Football Club. I don’t mean to go over old ground, we all know that based on what we have seen so far the club would have been far more successful without them. But it’s clear they are not interested in Liverpool winning trophies, only in making a profit. It’s a management style indicative of American businessmen, it’s a style called “Spreadsheet Management “. Success is based on how much profit you make, not on how many trophies you win. It’s all about ‘Return on Investment’. This management style will dictate whether a new stadium is built, how much Rafa is given to spend on players and how much tickets cost.

Fernando Torres - the best striker in the Premiership

Fernando Torres - the best striker in the Premiership

On Saturday Fernando Torres proved once again why he is the best forward in the Premiership. Unlike the first few games of the season where he looked out of sorts, dare I say even uninterested, against West Ham we saw once again what a truly fantastic striker he is.

Whether it’s fair to say or not, one worry for the first few games was that Torres was looking a bit predictable. His trade-mark ‘quick control and beat the defender on the outside’ just wasn’t working. Had defenders figured him out? Not a chance. On Saturday he was sharp, energetic and motivated and his footwork was mesmerizing, as he showed in his first goal. A Fernando Torres in this form will win a lot of games Liverpool this season but without him we could struggle to get all 3 points. (more…)

As you can see I’m predicting (and naturally hoping) that Liverpool get maximum points from their final 5 games and that United slip 3 times. Your thoughts??  Is it possible?

A prediction of scores of Liverpool & Man Utd's last games of the season

Liverpool Football Club is unlike any other football club in the world. No other club can claim it’s heritage, it’s history or its incredible supporters. No other team means so much to so many people. Those who think otherwise are just deluding themselves. (more…)
