A good mate of mine forwarded me an excellent email from a good mate of his which listed the players he felt should be let go this summer because a) they just aren’t good enough and b) so Kenny has more money to spend in the summer. A timely and important topic in my book.

I won’t name the good fella who wrote the email but you can find him in one scene in the documentary “One Night in May” right in the middle of the stands as it fades from a profile of Ancelloti to the Liverpool fans behind.

So here’s his list of players who should go and why: (more…)

Delighted that Maxi Rodriguez got his 1st hat-trick as Liverpool thrashed Birmingham City 5-0 at Anfield on Saturday. Maxi took his goals well and showed a real poachers instinct. Still the man-of the match was Luis Suarez. His movement and skill on and off the ball were simply excellent and he was involved in almost every forward move. Both Flanagan and Robinson thoroughly impressed again with assured displays that belied their youth and seeing Joe Cole come on and score the fifth was great to see but with all the transfer talk of up to 22 potentials deals both in and out of the club it seems doubtful Cole will be with Liverpool again next season.

With Roy Hodgson’s West Brom getting a fine 2-2 draw at Spurs that chase for 5th spot becomes a real possibility even though Tottenham have a game in hand but Liverpool now have a superior goal difference, + 12 vs +8. The game against them at Anfield on May 15th should be something special.

Joe Cole Liverpool FC's midfield signing

Can Cole ignite Liverpool next season?

The announcement that Joe Cole has agreed to join Liverpool has to be seen as a tremendous boost for Roy Hodgson and his ability to attract quality players to Anfield. Hodgson has moved quickly to strengthen Liverpool as well as sell players he does not see as being able to contribute to his vision of a Liverpool team that can challenge for a top spot in the league.

Ian Rush feels “It’s fantastic news for the club. We might not have been as successful as we would have liked to have been recently, but this shows we can still attract top-name players. We’ve got a great new manager in Hodgson and he knows what he wants.”

I’ve always liked Joe Cole, even though he’s done enough damage to Liverpool in the past, and he could well be exactly the kind of midfield player we need.

Not only is he a passionate, committed, and skilful player, he’s  an Englishman who totally understands what it takes to succeed in the Premiership. This makes him a tremendous asset.

Phil Thompson is also equally enthusiastic about the acquisition of Cole “He can be that #10, that catalyst between midfield and attack with Steven Gerrard dropping further back into the midfield. It all adds up to me.”

Coles arrival should also be seen as a very positive move to build a quality team that’s able to compete throughout the season by players such as Gerrard, Torres and maybe even Mascherano. With the recent arrival of Serbia striker Milan Jovanovic, also on free transfer arranged before Hodgson’s arrival, Liverpool are starting to look like a much stronger proposition.

It’s such a pleasure being able to write about positive news coming out of Anfield so let’s hope there’s more to come before the start of the new season.
