After three Europa League games and the Premiership season-opener things are looking pretty good for the start of Roy Hodgson’s reign as Liverpool manager. Who’d have thought optimism would be so high just a few months ago?

Liverpool showed a really positive approach against Arsenal last Sunday and they were incredibly unlucky to have Joe Cole sent off. It was tragic really. Even so, if had not been for an unfortunate mental blip by Reina, and that’s all it was as he had moments earlier made a fantastic save to keep it 1-0, Liverpool would have got off to the perfect start. Hats off to Mascherano as well who, even though he wants to leave the club, put in a terrific performance. Hodgson seems to feel he can retain Mascha for the next two seasons and let him go on a free if Inter don’t meet the minimum £25m asking price. Having him stay would be a real boost. (more…)

Liverpool FC's David NGog scoring against FK Rabotnicki

David Ngog scoring his 1st against FK Rabotnicki

Roy Hodgson’s career as Liverpool manager got off to the perfect start Thursday night with a comfortable 2-0 win over FK Rabotnicki of Skopje, Macedonia, in the 3rd round qualifier of the Europa League.

In front of a vocal 20,000 crowd Hodgson fielded a predominately inexperienced Liverpool team but they went about their task in a well-organized, professional, manner which resulted in two well taken goals by David Ngog either side of half-time. The second goal in particular was an excellent, clinical, finish from a perfect Kelly cross after he had broken down the right-wing. The result ensures Liverpool take a healthy away goals lead back to Anfield for the return leg on August 5th.

The win also confirmed Roy Hodgson’s decision to rest the majority of the first team squad who had just returned from World Cup duty, some have still yet to return, from this potentially tricky tie. “I’m just delighted so many players who were under pressure coming into the game can go back to Liverpool tomorrow feeling good about themselves. I’m very satisfied as it could have been very difficult for us in front of a big crowd who really supported their team.”

It’s great to see Roy and Liverpool season get off to such an emphatic start.

FK Rabotnicki

Liverpool travel to Macedonia to play FK Rabotnicki in the 3rd round qualifier of the Europa League on Thursday, July 29th with the return leg at Anfield on August 5th. This will be Roy Hodgson’s first competitive game in charge of Liverpool, so it will be a match not to miss.

Liverpool will overcome Atletico and reach the Europa Cup final on May 12

Anfield is made for great european nights like the Europa League semi-final we are about to bite our nails through on Thursday night against Atletico Madrid. The atmosphere will be intense as not only are Liverpool just one game away from reaching another european final in Hamburg, but they are also looking to salvage glory from a season that at the beginning promised so much but has delivered so little.

Obviously a win is a must and even though Liverpool are missing the all important Torres they must go for the throat and attack Atletico from the outset, just like they did against Juventus in the Champions League several season ago. It will be critical for the likes of Kuyt, Gerrard and Benayoun to be at their very best if we are to have any chance of going through as we cannot afford to create so few goal scoring opportunities like we did in the first leg.

It’s a game that Liverpool will not only need to score goals, 2-0 would see us through, but it will also require an outstanding defensive performance as an Atletico away goal would make reaching the final extremely difficult. Thankfully with Pepe Reina we have one of the best last lines of defence in the world.

All in all I’m confident that fortress Anfield will once again witness a great european night and that Hamburg will be a sea of red on May 12th.
