With Liverpool regaining form and having steadily moved up to 6th in the table the question now becomes how realistic is 4th place and that coveted Champions League spot. It’s a question that would have seemed ridiculous to ask before Kenny Dalglish took the helm.

So who are the teams we are competing with? Right now it’s the two London clubs Chelsea (45 points, 26 games) and Spurs (47 points, 27 games). Liverpool are sitting on 39 points from 27 games, 6 points behind Chelsea, who have a game in-hand, and 8 points adrift of Spurs having played the same number of games.

Torres score his 50th brilliant goal

A spirited Liverpool FC display at Villa Park on Tuesday night, including a 93rd minute Fernando Torres winner, his 50th for Liverpool and the fastest ever scored by any Liverpool player, provided the perfect, confidence building, tonic the Red Men needed to give their ailing season some sort of momentum and a platform to build upon. In short, it will have given them belief.

Ironically, it was the match-winner Torres who looked the most out-of-sorts player on the field until he scored that beauty of a goal. The final ball was missing and the ones he did receive he was unable to capitalize on. His body language didn’t look good. But like the world-class striker he is, he only needed one clear-cut chance and he took it brilliantly. (more…)

Steven Gerrard scoring against Wolves

Naturally, I was grateful for 3 points against Wolves on Saturday. The performance was less than convincing seeing as how it took a sending off to give us the advantage we needed to win the game. How times have changed when a home win against the team 6th from the bottom of the table is greeted with such relief. But under the circumstances we’ll take it and it was great to see Gerrard score such an excellent goal in front of the Kop.

So now on to Aston Villa. A must win game or a must not lose game? Unfortunately, I think Rafa will select his team and choose his tactics based on the latter. A draw would not be a bad result but a win at Villa Park would give the season some sort of momentum and give the team the confidence that they are so obviously lacking and desperately need.

On our last 3 visits to Villa we haven’t lost, winning 1 and drawing 2, however, with Villa just coming off a 3-0 defeat to Arsenal they will have something to prove to themselves and the home crowd. A very tough game, but it’s this kind of game we need right now to show what kind of ‘character’, as Rafa likes to say, this current Liverpool team really has.

premier league trophy

Of course I want Liverpool not only to qualify for the Champions League knock out stages, but for them to go on and win it for the sixth time. It would be glorious. But after the Lyon draw the chances of us doing so are looking more and more remote and so like everyone else I’m praying for a miracle. But if the unthinkable happens and we don’t qualify what would that mean for the rest of the season? Would it all be bad?

Some might believe it would be all over and that being 9 points behind Chelsea in the Premiership would be beyond us. But I’m not so sure. What if the Premiership was the only prize we were competing for? Would that create a clarity of purpose for Rafa and the team? We all have a sense that it’s the CL that Rafa really craves, and has excelled, and because of this it has been a huge distraction during league games prior to a Tuesday or Wednesday European game.

It’s the Premiership title most Liverpool supporters want in the trophy cabinet next May so without the CL distraction the sole purpose for the next 6 months would be catching the leaders. There would be no more pulling off the best players when the league match still needs to be won. No more resting players for important league games, plus players would have a full week to recover from any injuries.

One of my main concerns this season is that we don’t have the depth in the squad to compete in both the Premiership and the CL and this seems to be the case. But by only having the Premiership to focus on this might prove a different story.

So if a disaster does happen and we don’t go any further at such an early stage of the CL perhaps it might not turn out to be a such a bad thing.

The Greatest Prize

The Greatest Prize

Maybe I’m just an eternal optimist but even after Liverpool’s third defeat of the season last Sunday I still believe they can turn it around a make a title challenge. I thought Liverpool we’re a shot on target away from picking up points at Chelsea and we matched them for much of game with the differences in performance only being marginal. Reality is, we’ve put one of the toughest fixtures of the season behind us and its only early October.

Don’t forget Man Utd. won the Premiership last season after taking only 6 points from a possible 18 against the other top four teams but what they did do was win against the lower teams and that’s what Liverpool have to focus on starting at Sunderland on October 17th.

We’re 6 points adrift of Chelsea and 4 behind Man Utd. after 8 games, but that’s not a disaster. If we’re still 6 points behind them on January 1st then we’re right in the hunt. Rafa has been proved absolutely right in his belief that the other top teams will lose a lot more games this season and it hasn’t been by the big clubs as both Burnley and Wigan have proven. The objective from now on is to not let the point’s gap get any wider but to keep within a game or two of the leaders and give ourselves a chance.

Write Liverpool off it you want but here’s one fan that definitely wont be.

Xabi Alonso - if he stays Liverpool could win the Premiership

Xabi Alonso - if he stays Liverpool could win the Premiership

One of the close seasons burning questions for all Liverpool FC supporters is who we will buy before the start of the season and, probably just as importantly, who we will keep. The speculation in the UK newspapers (of which only 10% ever becomes reality, the majority being BS) is that we are in real danger of loosing Macherano and Alonso and that we’re in a fight with Real Madrid for a Rafa favourite, David Silva.

We’ve bought Glen Johnson, who I think is a good buy for Liverpool, but if the likes of Masha or Alonso do in fact leave we won’t need 1 or 2 players to win the Premiership we’ll need 3 or 4 world class players. If that scenario materializes it would be a minor miracle for Rafa to find  players of that quality, at the right price and in time for August 15th. Let’s pray this doesn’t happen.

On the other hand if we do keep Masha and Alonso then Liverpool could well be a signing or two away from gaining those extra 5 points we need to win the title next season.  Who those players are I don’t know but what I do know is we haven’t signed them yet. On the first game of the season when Liverpool run out onto the pitch at White Hart Lane it will be one of the most important team sheets in the clubs history because, in my mind, we simply have to win the league title next season.

As you can see I’m predicting (and naturally hoping) that Liverpool get maximum points from their final 5 games and that United slip 3 times. Your thoughts??  Is it possible?
