So the wait is over. Liverpool have won their first major trophy in six years and the League Cup for a record eighth time and it feels damn good. It wasn’t easy of course, Liverpool finals never are, but this one is hugely significant, especially as Dalglish has managed to win silverware in his first full-year as manager. It’s a tremendous achievement for Kenny who becomes only one of seven managers to have won all three of England’s domestic competitions. And the critics wondered if Kenny still had it. Anyone questioning him now?

I’m also not buying any arguments from other teams supporters that it’s “only the Carling Cup”. (more…)

Andy Carroll

Andy Carroll celebrates after scoring against Wolves

Having been my man-of-the-match against Man United on Saturday Andy Carroll looked the part once again in Liverpool’s impressive 3-0 win over Wolves on Tuesday night. Carroll’s movement on and off the ball looked assured mixed in with flashes of brilliance. (more…)

Andy Carroll - man of the match against Man Utd.

Andy Carroll showed what a quality player he can be in Saturday’s excellent 2-1 FA Cup win over Manchester United. Throughout the game he worked diligently upfront winning balls in the air, keeping control and intelligently laying off passes to his oncoming team mates. His impressive display culminated in a flicked header, just 2 minutes from the end of normal time, into the path of the advancing Dirk Kuyt. Kuyt, who had been on the field for 25 minutes, did well to latch onto the ball, beating Evra in the process, and taking the ball into the right side of the box before smashing home the winner in front of an ecstatic Kop. I’m a huge Kenny Dalglish supporter. I believe there’s no one better suited to lead Liverpool back to where they belong at the top of the premiership table but when I saw the staring line-up against Man City I was concerned and somewhat frustrated.

No Gerrard (isn’t he supposed be fitter than ever?) and no Bellamy? Not having their immediate creativity was surely going to be felt and when City saw Liverpool’s starting line-up they must have been given a real boost. I realize Gerrard may not be fully match-fit but why wait until the last 35 minutes to have him make an impact? Why not have him play the first 60 and create a foundation for Liverpool to go on and either win the game or consolidate a lead? Who knows, he may have even played longer. But Bellamy doesn’t need to get match-fit and having scored two goals against Newcastle on Friday he should have been an automatic starter to keep his personal momentum going and attack City from the first whistle. I don’t understand the logic. (more…)

Arsenal 1-1 Liverpool

Having been a Liverpool supporter for over 30 years this must rank as one of the greatest fight-backs from the jaws of certain defeat I’ve ever seen. Once Van Persie had scored that penalty in the 8th minute of extra time most of us (all of us?) thought it was over, but not this Dalglish team. They kept going with grit and determination and forced their way back into the game.  (more…)

Suarez & Kuyt celebrate after scoring against Man Utd.

Many Liverpool supporters will remember the shock when we learned back in 1977 that Kevin Keegan had decided Hamburg would be a better team to play for (rumour has it Tommy Smith gave him a black eye for that decision). The question was how could he be replaced? It was going to be impossible. Then a terrific bit of genius by Bob Paisley brought Kenny Dalglish to Anfield and the rest, as they say, is history.

It’s ironic a similar situation occurred this January with the shock decision by Torres to leave Liverpool. Fortunately, this time around it was Dalglish himself who had already put the wheels in motion to sign Luis Suarez whose  superb displays, especially on Sunday, have made Torres’s departure seem like a genuine piece of good luck that brought with it a boat load of money allowing Liverpool to buy Andy Carroll as well.

Suarez was superb against Man United, setting-up Dirk Kuyt’s hat trick and injecting a confidence and belief throughout the team. Suarez is class, on and off the field (as we saw in his farewell visit to Ajax) and you can only believe his partnership with Carroll will really be something special, way beyond any strike force we have seen at Anfield for a long time.

It’s hard to believe but the January transfer window is just over a month away and much of the talk will be centred on who Liverpool will bring in to strengthen the squad so we can make a push for that all important 4th spot.

Just as important, however, will be who Liverpool should let go. So for the sake of creating a heated debated here are my top 5 picks of the players that should be thanked for their services and then politely shown the door. (more…)

A frustrating loss. Liverpool should have been 2 or 3-0 up but poor finishing and hesitation cost us dearly as Spurs scored the winner in extra time. Sickening.

Ngog continues to look out of his depth up front (it was a penalty al la Fabregas) which once more highlights the fact Liverpool have only one experienced striker in the squad, not that that’s news to anyone. Let’s hope Damien Comolli is trying to sort this one out.

I feel for Roy on this defeat, I don’t think he can be blamed. The consolation is Liverpool looked controlled and impressive at times, which makes this loss even harder to take. We played well, especially in the first half, and created those wasted scoring opportunities. At 1-1 I still felt we had a chance to grab the winner. And once again Carragher showed what a class player he is and Kuyt showed what a frustrating player he can be.

Let’s hope Liverpool can take the positives from this defeat and put in a winning display against Aston Villa on December 6th when we welcome Gerard Houllier back to Anfield.

Dirk Kuyt of Liverpool FC

Kuyt to leave Anfield?

The rumour-mill has it that Dirk Kuyt is pondering his future at Anfield and is considering a move to Rafa Benitez’s new club, Inter Milan, after a £15million bid last week. The fact that Rafa wants Kuyt should be no surprise to anyone as he could have had a broken ankle and he would have still been in Benitez’s starting eleven. Hodgson, after his conversation with Milan’s owner Massimo Moratti, says there is no offer on the table for Kuyt, or indeed Mascherano. (more…)

Liverpool will overcome Atletico and reach the Europa Cup final on May 12

Anfield is made for great european nights like the Europa League semi-final we are about to bite our nails through on Thursday night against Atletico Madrid. The atmosphere will be intense as not only are Liverpool just one game away from reaching another european final in Hamburg, but they are also looking to salvage glory from a season that at the beginning promised so much but has delivered so little.

Obviously a win is a must and even though Liverpool are missing the all important Torres they must go for the throat and attack Atletico from the outset, just like they did against Juventus in the Champions League several season ago. It will be critical for the likes of Kuyt, Gerrard and Benayoun to be at their very best if we are to have any chance of going through as we cannot afford to create so few goal scoring opportunities like we did in the first leg.

It’s a game that Liverpool will not only need to score goals, 2-0 would see us through, but it will also require an outstanding defensive performance as an Atletico away goal would make reaching the final extremely difficult. Thankfully with Pepe Reina we have one of the best last lines of defence in the world.

All in all I’m confident that fortress Anfield will once again witness a great european night and that Hamburg will be a sea of red on May 12th.
