It goes without saying that in order to win games you have to score goals, more than the opposition at least, and it’s in this key area Liverpool have so clearly failed over the past few seasons. Even with Suarez and Carroll on board last season the “goals for” statistics was borderline awful and none of us want to hear the word “woodwork” too many times again next season.

I’ve had a look at the goals-scored and goals-against statistics over the last five seasons to see what the trend looks like and what it show is clearly disturbing. (more…)

Liverpool need to start adding to their already illustrious history

There is no doubt that Liverpool have one of the finest club histories in the world. They have legendary status which will be with them forever. It’s something all Liverpool supporters are extremely proud of but the club is now entering a new phase in it’s history with a new manager with a fresh approach, stable ownership who are in it for the long-term and the likelihood of a new stadium within the next few seasons. The stage is set for Liverpool to revive and reinvent themselves into one the England’s finest teams once more. Wishful thinking? Of course, but the club hasn’t been in this good a position for a decade or more and with it comes the need to start adding to their already illustrious history. (more…)

The prediction (still no official announcement at the time of writing) on Wednesday that Brenda Rogers will be Liverpool’s new manager will be met with a fair amount of skepticism and surprise. FSG seem to be applying their formula of bringing in a young, progressive, manager that has both on eye on developing youth as well and promoting attacking football. The problem is Rogers’s doesn’t have a pedigree that would lead anyone to think he has the credentials to take Liverpool into the top 4 of the Premiership or lead them successfully in Europe. Liverpool’s new owners get their first taste of success

Just over 18 months ago all Liverpool supporters were eternally grateful that John Henry and Fenway Sports Group recognized the true potential of Liverpool and rescued the club from the clutches of Hick’s & Gillett and imminent administration. You all know the parallels they saw between the Boston Red Socks and Liverpool and since taking over Boston in 2002 they have won baseballs biggest prize, the World Series, twice, the first time since 1918! Thankfully Liverpool’s lack of success doesn’t go that far back but their failure to win the Premier League since 1990 sometimes has us feeling that way. From the outset it was clear that FSG’s commitment was to get Liverpool back to winning ways which in turn would further increase the value of the club they had bought in terms of sponsorship opportunities, merchandise sales, lucrative competitions such as the Champions league and television revenues. The objectives were simple: make Liverpool a dominant force in English and European football once more. (more…)

Kenny Dalglish, manager of Liverpool FC.

Kenny needs to change his approach

With Liverpool’s form in free fall it’s time to simply forget about this years league position. It doesn’t matter who we finish above or below as the reality is it’s all now meaningless. We won’t be relegated, thankfully the league didn’t start in January, and we won’t end up in a position of any relevance. What Kenny needs to do immediately is throw his book of tactics out the window (they’re obviously not working), start fresh and begin the process of building for next season. (more…)

A good day at Anfield yesterday. After going one nil down to a soft goal Liverpool looked really good all round and kept pressing forward giving them the result their possession and play deserved.

Of course the highlight was the return of the sublime Gerrard who looked like he’d never been away. His creative influence was immediate and Carroll must have wondered what had hit him as Stevie provided the pin-point accurate crosses he has so desperately been looking for. Gerrard himself scored an excellent goal, set up by the deftest of weighted passes from Henderson from the edge of the box. With no one in a good position to cross to Gerrard did the only decent thing and that was to fire in the third goal from a tight angle to put the game away.

However, the man-of-the-match for me was Bellamy. What a great re-signing he has turned out to be. The fact he is loving his second term at Liverpool shines through and although I’m not questioning Kenny’s team selections, I’d love to see him starting every game as he did on Friday.

So with Saturdays excellent results, still smiling about the Blackburn win, Liverpool find themselves 2 points out of 4th spot in 6th position and level on points with Chelsea, who have a better goal difference of just 4 goals.

So onto a challenging away game on Tuesday at Man City but with the way Liverpool prepare themselves for these “top 4” matches we might just be in for a pleasant surprise.

I’m sure you’ve already seen this but just in case here’s photos of the Chelsea fans epic fail Torres banner. As you can see, it’s a direct rip-off of the original Liverpool banner but the bright sparks at Chelsea failed to realise the design at the bottom of the LFC banner was a depiction of the Shankly Gates. Plonkers. I wonder if we’ll ever see this one again at Stamford Bridge LOL.

Liverpool will overcome Atletico and reach the Europa Cup final on May 12

Anfield is made for great european nights like the Europa League semi-final we are about to bite our nails through on Thursday night against Atletico Madrid. The atmosphere will be intense as not only are Liverpool just one game away from reaching another european final in Hamburg, but they are also looking to salvage glory from a season that at the beginning promised so much but has delivered so little.

Obviously a win is a must and even though Liverpool are missing the all important Torres they must go for the throat and attack Atletico from the outset, just like they did against Juventus in the Champions League several season ago. It will be critical for the likes of Kuyt, Gerrard and Benayoun to be at their very best if we are to have any chance of going through as we cannot afford to create so few goal scoring opportunities like we did in the first leg.

It’s a game that Liverpool will not only need to score goals, 2-0 would see us through, but it will also require an outstanding defensive performance as an Atletico away goal would make reaching the final extremely difficult. Thankfully with Pepe Reina we have one of the best last lines of defence in the world.

All in all I’m confident that fortress Anfield will once again witness a great european night and that Hamburg will be a sea of red on May 12th.

Alonso's departure a severe blow

Finding Liverpool in 6th place in the league, loosing 6 of their 17 games and 13 points adrift of Chelsea is a surreal experience, especially after the great run we had last season and the expectations it brought into this one. Perhaps I should have known better, especially after our indifferent pre-season form which carried into the beginning of the regular season, along with the fact the squad wasn’t strengthened as it should have been.

Being a loyal supporter I naturally want to do nothing but support Rafa and the team and, like Carragher, pray for better times and soon. I tell myself that criticizing the manager and the team won’t make the situation any better but can only make it worse and further fuel the negativity and doubt that has fallen over the club. But I’m a supporter in conflict. There needs to be change. (more…)

Michael Owen - should have been re-signed

It amazes me that after coming so close to winning the Premiership title last season everyone and his dog knew that if we were to go all the way this season we needed to strengthen the midfield, to replace Alonso, and buy a quality, established, striker to partner & support Torres. Everyone except Rafa and the rest of the Anfield management team that is.

Rafa apparently has filled the void in midfield with the signing of Aquilani. I say apparently as no one has seen him play yet beside the 20 minutes he got in the Carling Cup game against Arsenal. Now am I missing something here? If Aquilani was OK to come on for 20 minutes in that game why hasn’t he been used since? Rafa your logic is mystifying. But let’s give Benitez the benefit of the doubt on this one. Perhaps Aquilani’s injuries were more serious than we thought and he does indeed prove to be a class player.

However, there can be no forgiveness on the striker issue. (more…)
